Lanolin is another name meant for wool fat or wool grease that is derived from domestic sheep. This yellow substance is derived from the fleece of sheep as a result of processing the fleece which has been shorn from the sheep. The reason sheep produce lanolin is because of its water-proofing properties. It retains the sheep's internal body moisture in and at the same time, external humidity out. Great for raining weather since it keeps the integrity of the wool to guard the sheep warm.
In commercial lanolin processing, refining is done in sterile environments and through many stages. This refining process is the key to the safety of the lanolin. Depending on the needs of the manufacturer, the lanolin can be refined crudely, in which case it may still contain impurities. Or it can be refined to medical grade - safe enough for nursing mothers to use on cracked nipples.
Therefore, when a new mother breast feeds using lanolin-based products, her infant may be getting trace amounts of these harmful chemicals. In addition, some women have wool allergy and will react to lanolin based products. Religious women who cannot have milk with animal products also cannot use lanolin. Lanolin is also a dark brown, greasy and smelly gel and is known to stain undergarments and bed linens.

Then in a double boiler, set it over simmering water, or in a heavy saucepan set it over a low heat. Combine the beeswax, apricot oil, and coconut oil and then cook them while stirring constantly, for about 10 minutes. Afterward, pour the mixture into a glass container and set it aside.
