Serotonin syndrome - also known as "serotonergic syndrome" or "hyperserotonemia" - is caused by an execessive amount of serotonin in the central nervous system. Serotonin is produced by the nerve cells of the spinal cord and brain to aid in the regulation of body temperature, behavior, and attention.
The symptoms of serotonin syndrome include increased heart rate, excessive sweating, and dilated pupils. Perhaps the most dangerous symptom of serotonin syndrome is life-threateningly high fever. Serotonin syndrome can lead to fevers in excess of 104 degrees Fahrenheit. Fevers of that magnitude are capable of causing brain damage and death.
Serotonin is actually a chemical that plays a big role in the male ejaculatory function. Those who have been found to have low serotonin levels in their brains were also found to experience premature ejaculation. Conversely, high levels of serotonin in the brain cause men to last longer in bed during sexual intercourse. Men who often experience pre mature ejaculation are able to stop premature ejaculation when treated with serotonin. Thus, this pharmacological treatment has now become a more popular treatment option as opposed to behavioral training methods and penile implements.
In the mind-body health matrix, mental and physical operations are intimately connected. Our understanding of this mind-body connection has rapidly expanded due to the world of neuro-science research, where brain health experts theorize that important brain "mood" regulators include natural serotonin and norepinephrine. Meanwhile, these same neuro-scientists theorize that your body utilizes these hormonal regulators as a chemical arbiter for "physical pain".
Anti-depressants are not the only serotonin affecting drugs in the migraine sufferer's arsenal. One of the most common families of migraine abortive (ends a migraine attack in the beginning stages) drugs - Triptans - and herbal remedies such as St. John's Wort also affect serotonin levels. Due to the number of medications a migraine sufferer could be taking without thinking about the serotonin connection, it is important to be aware of how to prevent and identify a serotonin overdose.
SSRIs are considered to have fewer side effects than other anti-depressants because they are selective in manipulating the chemical serotonin. Other anti-depressants such as MAOIs (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors) and TCAs (Tricyclic Anti-Depressants) effect serotonin along with other chemicals in the brain. This makes them a bit more invasive, which tends to result in more frequent and more severe side effects.
Neurosceience is a rather complex area and scientists do not yet understand the exact role of serotonin imbalances and how they can affect our mood and emotions. What we do know for sure is that neurotransmitters which are responsible for sending messages in the brain are crucial for balanced functioning so that we are emotionally balanced and stable. The main ones are serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine.
